After everyone got really excited about a law that would help women have more opportunities, the leader of the group that disagrees with the law spoke up and said that there should be a special rule just for women who are part of a certain group called Other Backward Classes (OBC). Kharge's opinion is important because some smaller parties in a group called INDIA didn't like the Bill because it didn't have a special rule for them. Everyone gets a turn to have a special place for themselves. Just before the Bill was presented in the Lok Sabha, Sonia Gandhi, who is the leader of the Congress Parliamentary Party, said that the Bill belongs to their party and is something they have made. In a recent speech, Kharge talked about a law that was discussed in a special group. He said that the group agreed on the law in 2010, but it didn't get approved by everyone. One of the reasons was because some people were worried about giving special opportunities to women from a certain group.
Because of a rule in our country's laws, a certain group of people called SC and ST women have the right to get one-third of the available seats in important positions. But if we don't change the laws to make sure that women from backward classes also get one-third of the seats, they won't have the same opportunity. It wouldn't be fair to these women if we don't make this change. The Congress leader also mentioned that many of these women don't have a good education and sometimes political parties choose women who are not very strong or capable. “I know how women from OBC, SC communities are chosen by political parties,” he said The BJP members didn't like what Kharge said. The Finance Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman, disagreed with his statement and said it wasn't okay. She said that all the women in her party, including the Prime Minister and the President, are strong and empowered. Kharge said that women from certain communities did not have the same chances as Sitharaman. Sitharaman responded by saying that the opposition leader shouldn't disrespect people like that. She also mentioned that the government wants to give more opportunities to all women. Later, Kharge wanted the government to include everyone in decision-making on topics like giving more opportunities to women and promoting officers from SC and ST backgrounds in the government. ‘Event management’ The other objection was about the fact that the reservation would be effective only after a Census and delimitation exercise. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh, in a statement, called it an “election jumla” and “huge betrayal of hopes of women”. Later, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), Ramesh said, “In a season of election jumlas, this one is the biggest of them all! A huge betrayal of the hopes of crores of Indian women and girls.” “As we had pointed out earlier, Modi government has not yet conducted the 2021 Decadal Census making India the only country in G20 that has failed to carry out the Census. Now it says that the reservation for women will come into effect only following the first decadal Census conducted after the Women’s Reservation Bill has become an Act. When will this Census take place?” he asked. In another post, he said if the Prime Minister had any real intention to prioritise women empowerment, the Bill would have been implemented immediately without the ifs and buts and other conditions.
