Kolkata’s Sealdah sessions court has sentenced prime accused Sanjoy Roy to life imprisonment in the RG Kar rape and murder case. Sessions Judge Anirban Das also ruled that the state government must provide ₹17 lakh as compensation to the victim’s family. The victim, a postgraduate trainee doctor, was found dead in a seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College on August 9 last year. Roy was arrested by the Kolkata Police on August 10 and later handed over to the CBI, which formally charged him in the case.
The National Commission for Women (NCW) has welcomed the verdict, emphasizing its significance in ensuring justice. While the commission had advocated for the death penalty, it acknowledged the court's decision, stating that the punishment will reinforce the message that such heinous crimes will not go unpunished.
The NCW further expressed hope that the verdict would instill confidence in society and serve as a deterrent against crimes against women.
