Mamata Banerjee becomes the Vice-Chancellor of West Bengal's University: Assembly passes Bill.

The governor acts as the university chancellor in most states across the country. The Governor also plays an important role in appointing the Vice-Chancellor. Conflict between state governors and state governments over the appointment of university vice-chancellors in states including Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Marathas continues. Thus these states are taking steps to appoint the First-Minister as University Chancellor instead of the Governor. In this context, a bill has been passed in the state assembly to appoint First Minister Mamata Banerjee as the new governor of the state universities in West Bengal. The state cabinet recently approved a bill to appoint Mamata Banerjee, the first minister to replace the governor, as the vice chancellor of all universities previously run by the West Bengal state government. Following this, the bill was tabled in the Assembly today and received its approval. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and state Governor Jagdeep Tankar are already at loggerheads.
