An intense depression over the Bay of Bengal has strengthened into Cyclone Sitrang. Cyclone Chitrang has crossed the coast of Bangladesh. Faster than expected, Cyclone Chitrang has crossed the coast yesterday midnight. Five people have died in Bangladesh.
Subsequently, as a precautionary measure, 28,155 people and 2,736 cattle living in the Cox's Bazar coastal area of the country have been evacuated and shifted to camps. Cox's Bazar Deputy Commissioner Mamunur Rasheed said that 576 camps have been prepared for this purpose. He also said that educational institutions have been kept ready to be used as shelters if required. A red alert has also been issued for four north-eastern states of India.
