The Forecast 1 year ago Congress

E.V.K.S. Elangovan, a towering figure in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape, passed away on December 14, 2024, at the age of 73. A leader who upheld the progressive ideals of his illustrious lineage, Elangovan was the grandson of the iconic social reformer Periyar E.V. Ramasamy and the son of E.V.K. Sampath, a founding member of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). Throughout his life, he dedicated himself to the welfare of the people and the principles of equality and justice.

Elangovan’s political journey was marked by milestones that exemplify his unwavering commitment to public service. Following in his father’s footsteps, he joined the Congress Party and quickly rose through the ranks. His tenure as the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) president during two critical periods showcased his ability to lead with determination, even as the party faced challenging times in the state.

Elangovan was elected as an MLA from Sathyamangalam in 1984, and later as an MP from the Gobichettipalayam constituency in 2004. As the Union Minister of State for Textiles during the UPA regime, he brought transformative changes to the industrial sector, contributing significantly to India’s economic growth.

Despite personal tragedies, including the loss of his son in early 2023, Elangovan continued to serve with resilience and purpose. His victory in the Erode East by-election was a testament to his enduring connection with the people.

A relentless advocate for social progress, Elangovan’s policies and contributions will remain a guiding light for Tamil Nadu. His life’s work, rooted in a legacy of reform and compassion, will be remembered as a beacon of hope and inspiration for generations to come.
