The Congress has described as “shameful” the absence of a joint statement following last week’s BRICS+ meeting held in the Indian capital. It alleged that India’s insistence on softening the language regarding Israel and Palestine prevented a consensus among member countries.

In a post on X, Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh stated that India’s position was unacceptable to several BRICS+ member nations, which led to the failure to issue a joint communiqué after the recent meeting of Deputy Foreign Ministers and Special Envoys.

“Iran and the United Arab Emirates are both part of the 11-member BRICS+ grouping. Their differing positions on the ongoing war in West Asia are natural. However, another reason for the absence of a joint statement was India’s insistence on softening the language on Israel and Palestine. This was not accepted by representatives from Russia, China, Brazil, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, the UAE, and Iran, which is both surprising and shameful,” Ramesh said in his X post.

Ramesh further alleged that India is “the only major country” continuing to show unwavering solidarity with Israel despite its actions in Gaza, southern Lebanon, and the occupied West Bank. “India’s Prime Minister and Israel’s Prime Minister are clearly close allies, and now Israel has also become a significant part of the vast and exploitative Modi empire,” he alleged.

However, official sources maintained that the lack of consensus was due to sharp differences among member states regarding the evolving situation in West Asia. They stated that India’s position on Palestine “remains unchanged” and rejected suggestions that New Delhi had altered its stance.
