Lok Sabha Expansion Plan Assures 50% Seat Increase for States

The Centre has announced a major proposal to increase the strength of the Lok Sabha from the current maximum of 550 seats to 850, assuring that every State will receive around 50% more seats.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah informed the Lok Sabha that the redistribution will ensure no State loses its existing share of representation. The current proportion of seats, based on the 1971 population, will remain unchanged even after the expansion.

As per the proposed changes, Tamil Nadu’s seats may rise from 39 to about 59, Karnataka from 28 to 42, Kerala from 20 to 30, Andhra Pradesh from 25 to 38, and Telangana from 17 to 26. The government said the move aims to improve representation without affecting the balance among States.

The Bills also propose to begin the delimitation process immediately, removing the earlier 2026 deadline provision. Seat allocation will continue to follow Articles 81 and 82 of the Constitution, ensuring a balance between State representation and equal value for each vote.

The proposal seeks to strengthen democratic representation while maintaining fairness across all regions.
