Priyanka Chaturvedi Calls SC Order on NCERT Textbook ‘Judicial Overreach’

Priyanka Chaturvedi, a Rajya Sabha MP from Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray), has criticized the recent order of the Supreme Court of India regarding a Class 8 Social Science textbook published by National Council of Educational Research and Training.

Speaking on Friday, Ms. Chaturvedi described the court’s direction as “judicial overreach”. She urged the government to ensure balance among the three pillars of governance — the legislature, executive, and judiciary — and said all institutions should remain open to public scrutiny.

The controversy relates to a textbook chapter that mentioned “corruption in the judiciary”. Last month, the Supreme Court imposed a blanket ban on the Class 8 Social Science textbook containing the chapter. Earlier this week, the court also expressed dissatisfaction with an affidavit submitted by NCERT regarding the issue.

The court directed NCERT to distance itself from the three-member team that prepared the chapter and barred them from future roles funded by public money. The matter continues to draw attention as discussions on academic content and institutional accountability grow.
