Iran Announces Alternate Routes for Ships in Strait of Hormuz

Janani G 1 week ago World News

Iran has announced alternative routes for ships travelling through the Strait of Hormuz, citing safety concerns due to the presence of sea mines in the main navigation zone.

The announcement was made on April 9, 2026, as part of measures to ensure safe maritime movement in the region. The strait is one of the world’s most important shipping routes, carrying nearly one-fifth of global oil supplies.

Tehran had effectively blocked access to the key waterway since early March, which led to a sharp rise in global energy prices. The disruption raised concerns among countries dependent on oil shipments passing through the route.

As part of a recently agreed two-week truce, Iran has now decided to temporarily reopen the strait. The introduction of alternative routes is aimed at reducing risks and maintaining the flow of essential goods and energy supplies.

The move is expected to ease tensions in global shipping and energy markets, while ensuring safer passage for vessels during the ongoing situation.
