India’s Goods and Services Tax (GST) has entered its 10th year, marking an important milestone in the country’s indirect tax system. Over the past nine years, GST collections have reached a total of ₹144.6 lakh crore, reflecting the steady growth of tax compliance and economic activity across the country.

Among all states, Maharashtra recorded the highest GST collection, contributing ₹22.28 lakh crore, which accounts for 20.7% of the total revenue collected since the tax regime was introduced. The state has consistently remained the top contributor due to its strong industrial and commercial base.

Tamil Nadu secured the fourth position with total GST collections of ₹8.55 lakh crore, contributing 7.9% of the overall national revenue. The state's manufacturing sector, industrial output, and expanding business activity have played a key role in maintaining strong tax collections over the years.

Introduced on July 1, 2017, GST replaced multiple indirect taxes with a unified tax system, simplifying taxation and creating a common national market. Since its implementation, the system has undergone several reforms aimed at improving compliance, digital filing, and revenue collection.

The continued rise in GST collections highlights the growing strength of India’s tax framework and reflects the expanding formal economy. The milestone also underlines the important role of GST in supporting public finances and contributing to the country’s long-term economic growth.
