Centre Reviews WhatsApp Username Feature, May Issue Notice to Meta

Janani G 2 days ago National News

The Central Government is reportedly considering issuing a notice to Meta over WhatsApp’s proposed Username feature, following concerns that it could be misused. Officials believe the new feature may create challenges similar to those seen on Telegram, where anonymous usernames have at times been linked to misuse.

According to sources, the government has conveyed its concerns and dissatisfaction to Meta during recent discussions. Officials are understood to be examining whether the feature could make it more difficult to identify users involved in unlawful or fraudulent activities.

The proposed Username feature would allow WhatsApp users to connect without sharing their mobile numbers directly. While the feature is intended to improve user privacy, authorities are assessing whether it could also be exploited for cybercrime, online fraud, or other illegal purposes if adequate safeguards are not in place.

The Centre is expected to seek detailed clarifications from Meta before the feature is introduced more widely. Discussions are likely to focus on user verification, traceability, and measures to prevent misuse.

The government’s review reflects its continued emphasis on balancing user privacy with digital safety and ensuring that new technology features comply with existing regulatory and security requirements.
