Centre Orders Removal of Seven EV Battery Apps

Janani G 8 hours ago National News

The Union government has directed Google and Apple to remove seven mobile applications linked to electric vehicle battery management, citing concerns over potential cybersecurity risks. The move follows reports that security vulnerabilities in these applications could be exploited to interfere with the operation of electric vehicles.

The affected applications include BAT-BMS, SMART BMS and LOSSIGY, along with four other battery management apps. According to the government, the applications contain Bluetooth-related security weaknesses that could allow hackers to gain unauthorized access to battery management systems.

Officials warned that these vulnerabilities could enable cybercriminals to remotely disable moving electric vehicles by exploiting weaknesses in the Bluetooth connection between the smartphone application and the vehicle's battery system. Such incidents could pose serious safety and security risks for vehicle owners and other road users.

As a precautionary measure, the government has instructed both Google and Apple to remove the identified applications from their app stores while further action is taken. The decision is aimed at preventing possible misuse until the security concerns are fully addressed.

The latest move reflects the government's increasing focus on cybersecurity and digital safety as connected vehicle technologies continue to expand. It also highlights the importance of strengthening software security to ensure the safe and reliable operation of electric vehicles.
