The Forecast 4 years ago Coimbatore
The water level of the Siruvani Dam continues to fall. The water level is 16 feet as of last 8th. Industry has expressed concern that the falling water level could affect drinking water needs of the urban population as well as the industry.
Coimbatore Corporation has five zones and 100 wards. There are 6500 streets in the Corporation areas alone. Coimbatore is next to Chennai in population growth. About 20 lakh families live in the Coimbatore Corporation areas alone. Apart from this, there are about 10 lakh people who come and go daily for work from other states and outer districts. The pillur and Siruvani dams meet the drinking water needs of the city of Coimbatore.
The Siruvani Dam is the main source of drinking water for the people of Coimbatore. The dam is located in Palakkad, Kerala. Drinking water from this dam is being supplied to the people of 30 wards in the Corporation and also to the numerous villages along the roads. The Siruvani Dam is 49.53 feet high. But the Kerala government does not allow water storage above 45 feet. For the last three years, the Kerala Irrigation Department has not allowed the dam to reach its full capacity, citing security concerns. In particular, during the months of January and February, excess water from the dam was released into the Siruvani river and the water level of the dam was significantly reduced. The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu has written a letter to the Chief Minister of Kerala on February 1 in this regard. However, due to the low water level in the dam, the amount of water coming from the Siruvani dam through the cavernous canal per day is very low at present. Currently, the water level in dam has dropped to 16.60 feet. As a result, the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board is providing less than 51 million liters of water per day instead of 90 million liters. Currently 50.37 MLD per day. Drinking water is taken. Of which 42.78 MLD. Drinking water is being supplied to the Corporation of Coimbatore and the rest of the roadside villages. Due to the declining water level of the Siruvani Dam, there is a possibility of water shortage in the coming days. It is said that it has been advised to implement an alternative scheme on behalf of the corporation in case of water shortage. Corporation Commissioner Mr. Prathap said, "The southwest monsoon has started in Kerala. Due to this, the water level in the dam will increase. The water level of the dam will rise. So water shortages are less likely".
Coimbatore is also Known as the Manchester of South India, Coimbatore has over 1 lakh small, medium, and large enterprises. It directly and indirectly employs about 20 lakh workers. Most of the companies are located in the areas under the Corporation of Coimbatore. In industrial enterprises, only Siruvani water is used for mechanical purposes. If the water level of the Siruvani Dam drops, the industry will be affected. James, Coimbatore district president of the Tamil Nadu Industrial and Micro Entrepreneurs' Association, said, "The water from the Siruvani Dam is being used by companies to operate automatic machines. There is a situation where borewell water cannot be used on these machines. Therefore, there is a major need for the water industry of the Siruvani Dam. The Government of Kerala should co-operate with the action taken by the Government of Tamil Nadu to raise the water level of the Siruvani Dam, '' he said.
Meanwhile, on the instructions of the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, a high level committee has been set up on behalf of the Government of Tamil Nadu to raise the water level of the Siruvani Dam. It also plans to hold talks with the Kerala government.
An official of the TWAD in Coimbatore said, "A high level committee has been set up on behalf of the Tamil Nadu government to hold talks with the Kerala government to increase the amount of water to be taken from the Siruvani dam for drinking purposes and to raise the water level."
Kerala government officials have been called for talks. The talks will take place in Coimbatore. It will be urged to raise the water level of the Siruvani Dam, he added
