The Kozhikode Corporation provides homes with source-level waste management devices at a 90% discount. However, numerous people in the city are either uninformed of the offer or are hesitant to take it for a variety of reasons.
The programme, which was established a few months ago, was designed to assist 56,500 homes. However, only about 37,000 homes in two phases have applied for the equipment. "The lack of awareness about its usage is perceived to be one of the reasons for people's reluctance," said S. Jayasree, head of the Health Standing Committee.
The municipal government is supplying waste management equipment such as biogas plants, Bokashi buckets, ring compost, pipe compost, and green bins at a 10% discount. Despite this, only about 24,000 individuals applied in the first round, with a handful withdrawing later. In the second phase, about 17,000 individuals applied. "We've tried to spread the word through residents' associations and the Haritha Karma Sena." Nonetheless, many people are uninformed of the effort. "We intend to train the applicants on how to use the equipment effectively," Jayasree added.
The applicants have already received the equipment in the first phase, and the second phase distribution will take place soon. "We had more applications for biogas plants than we expected." "Because the equipment was not ready, the first phase was delayed," she explained. The scheme was implemented to reduce the amount of rubbish hauled to the Njeliyanparamba yard.
