GST Cuts Fail to Lower Food Prices: Report

Janani G 1 day ago National News

A report by Bank of Baroda states that prices of food items have not seen any major change even after the implementation of GST reforms.

According to the findings, despite reductions in GST rates on several goods, the benefit has not reflected in the prices of essential food products. The report highlights that while GST on food items was reduced significantly, retail prices have largely remained stable without noticeable decline.

In contrast, prices of some non-essential goods have shown a drop. The report notes that car prices fell by about 7.5 percent, while air conditioners saw a reduction of around 5.9 percent following GST changes.

The analysis points to a difference in how tax reductions impact various sectors. While some industries passed on the benefits to consumers, others did not show similar trends.

The report provides insight into price patterns after GST implementation.  The findings highlight the need for continued monitoring to ensure benefits reach consumers effectively.
