The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that the impact of a “Super El Niño” could significantly affect the upcoming southwest monsoon season across India. According to the weather agency, central and northern parts of the country may receive below-normal rainfall between June and September, increasing the possibility of severe drought conditions.
At the same time, southern coastal states are likely to experience heavier-than-usual rainfall during the monsoon period. Weather experts said the changing rainfall pattern is linked to rising sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean.
A “Super El Niño” occurs when temperatures in those Pacific regions rise more than 2 degrees Celsius above normal levels. This climatic event often influences weather systems across many countries, including India, where the monsoon plays a major role in agriculture, water supply, and daily life.
Meteorologists are closely monitoring the development of weather conditions in the Pacific Ocean and their possible impact on India’s seasonal rainfall. The IMD is expected to continue issuing regular updates as the monsoon season approaches.
