Bangladesh Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman has been elected as the next President of the United Nations General Assembly after securing a majority vote in a closely contested election. His victory marks an important diplomatic achievement and places him at the helm of one of the world’s most significant international forums.
Rahman received 99 votes, defeating Cyprus candidate Andreas Kakouris, who secured 91 votes in the election. The vote was conducted by secret ballot among member states of the United Nations. Following the result, Rahman was officially chosen to preside over the 81st session of the General Assembly.
The presidency of the General Assembly rotates among regional groups, and the upcoming session falls under the Asia-Pacific region. Rahman is scheduled to assume office in September and will serve a one-year term. During his tenure, he will oversee General Assembly proceedings and help guide discussions on major international issues.
The United Nations General Assembly serves as a platform where member nations discuss global challenges, international cooperation, development, peace, and security. As president, Rahman will play a key role in facilitating dialogue among countries and supporting the Assembly’s work.
His election reflects the continued importance of international cooperation and highlights the role of diplomacy in bringing nations together to address shared global priorities.
