The Central Pollution Control Board has announced a comprehensive action plan aimed at strengthening India's commitment to ban single-use plastic products. Accordingly, the Union Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change announced on August 12 last year (2021) that the production of disposable plastics will be banned across India from July 1. Production, import, storage, distribution, sale and use of low-use, low-use, high-waste plastic products will be banned across India from January 1. Orders have been issued at the national, state and local levels not to supply raw materials to factories operating on banned plastic products. Similarly, local authorities have been instructed to issue new business licenses on the condition that they will not sell disposable plastic products.
Business licenses will also be revoked if they are found to be selling banned plastic products. Violators could face up to 5 years in prison or a fine of up to Rs 1 lakh or both under the Environmental Protection Act.
