Historic Oscar Win Sparks Debate on Gender Bias in Cinematography

Janani G 4 weeks ago General

The Oscar win of Autumn Durald Arkapaw has highlighted long-standing gender gaps in cinematography, sparking discussions among Indian women professionals in the field.

Arkapaw became the first woman cinematographer to win an Academy Award in 2026, marking a major milestone after decades of underrepresentation. In India, where cinematography remains largely male-dominated, her achievement has drawn strong reactions.

Cinematographers like Anjuli Shukla, Savita Singh, Priya Seth, Modhura Palit, Kavya Sharma, and Preetha Jayaraman said women are gradually gaining space but still face bias. They noted that talent is often overlooked due to gender, and stressed the need for better visibility and mentorship.

The cinematographers also shared creative preferences, including choices in lighting, framing, and camera techniques.

While progress is visible, challenges remain.

Arkapaw’s win is seen as an important step that could inspire greater inclusion and opportunities for women in cinematography.
