The World Happiness Report 2026 highlights a growing link between heavy social media use and lower happiness levels, especially among young people.
Published on March 19 ahead of the International Day of Happiness, the report found that increased use of social media, gaming, and casual browsing is associated with lower life satisfaction. The impact is more noticeable among young people in English-speaking countries and Western Europe, particularly among girls.
In contrast, activities such as communication, news consumption, learning, and content creation were linked to higher levels of wellbeing.
The report was prepared by the Wellbeing Research Centre in partnership with Gallup and the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network.
It provides a global view of how digital habits are shaping wellbeing. The findings highlight the need for balanced digital use to support better mental wellbeing.
