The central government has said that the number of pending cases in courts across the country is close to 5 crore. Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju responded in writing to the questions asked during Question Time in the Lok Sabha yesterday. He said:
As of 1st of this month, 72 thousand 62 cases are pending in the Supreme Court. As of December 25, 59 lakh 55 thousand 873 cases are pending in 25 high courts. 4 crore 23 lakh cases are pending in district courts and lower courts. Thus, the number of pending cases in all courts is 483 lakh. It is approaching 5 crores. Finalization of pending cases is within the jurisdiction of the Judiciary. The government has no part in it. No time limit has been fixed for closing the cases.
There are many reasons for the backlog of cases, including a lack of judges and a waiting list. This is what he said. During the Lok Sabha Question Time, India was asked about India being the third largest military spender in the world last year. To this, Joint Minister of Defense Ajaypat said:
"The Ministry of Defense does not have the details of military expenditure in other countries." However, the Sweden-based Stockholm International Peace Research Institute on its website says that India is ranked 3rd. It says that the United States is in the first place (spending 80 million dollars), China in the second place (29 thousand 335 million dollars), and India is in the third place (7 thousand 660 million dollars). At 46 locations, radar stations are installed and coastal defense is monitored. This is what he said.
