President Droupadi Murmu has given her assent to the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Amendment Bill, according to a gazette notification issued by the Union Law Ministry on March 30, 2026.
The Bill was passed by the Rajya Sabha on March 25, a day after it was cleared by the Lok Sabha. With the President’s approval, the legislation has now become law.
The Bill aims to amend existing provisions related to the protection of rights for transgender persons. However, it had drawn criticism from sections of the Opposition, who had requested that it be sent to a select committee for further review. They raised concerns that some provisions could affect the dignity and rights of third-gender individuals.
In addition, around 140 lawyers and feminists had written to the President, urging her to withhold assent. They cited possible constitutional issues and concerns over the process followed in passing the Bill.
With the assent now granted, the focus is expected to shift towards the implementation of the amended law.
