Rolls-Royce Joins Race to Power India’s Fifth-Generation Fighter Jet

The Forecast 1 week ago National News

British aerospace giant Rolls-Royce has officially joined the competition to develop a next-generation engine for India’s ambitious fifth-generation Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) project. The move intensifies the race to secure one of India's most critical defense contracts.

In a major pitch to the Indian government, Rolls-Royce has offered to completely co-design and co-develop the high-thrust engine directly within India. Crucially, the British company has promised to hand over full intellectual property (IP) rights to New Delhi. This complete technology transfer would allow India to modify, upgrade, and maintain the engine independently without any future foreign restrictions.

The entry of Rolls-Royce sets up a highly competitive three-way contest. French defense major Safran and American company General Electric (GE) are already in the running to supply propulsion technology for the stealth fighter program.

This growing international competition highlights India's rising status as a major global defense hub. By securing full technology ownership, India takes a definitive step toward achieving long-term self-reliance and sovereignty in advanced military aviation.
