Supreme Court Seeks Response on Biometric Voting Plea

The Forecast 1 week ago National News

The Supreme Court has issued notices to the Election Commission of India (ECI) and the central government on a plea seeking the introduction of biometric verification in elections.

The petition, filed as a public interest case, has requested the use of fingerprint and iris-based identification methods during voting. It argues that such a system could help prevent irregularities like duplicate voting, impersonation, and fake votes.

During the hearing held recently, a bench led by the Chief Justice took note of the concerns raised in the petition and sought responses from the concerned authorities. The court has asked both the ECI and the central government to clarify their position on the matter.

The proposal aims to strengthen the election process by improving accuracy and transparency in voter identification. It also highlights the need to adopt technology to ensure fair and secure voting practices.

The case is expected to be taken up further after responses are submitted.  The development marks an important step in examining ways to enhance the integrity of the electoral system.
