New rules for vehicles carrying excess weight on national highways will come into effect from today, with additional charges to be imposed on violators.
According to the new guidelines, vehicles exceeding the permitted weight limit will be subject to extra toll charges. However, if the excess load is within 10 percent of the allowed limit, no penalty will be applied. Vehicles carrying weight beyond this margin will face higher charges.
If the excess weight exceeds 10 percent, drivers will be required to pay double the standard toll fee. In cases where the load goes beyond 40 percent of the permitted limit, the toll charge will increase to four times the normal rate.
Officials have stated that all such payments will be collected only through the FASTag system, ensuring a smooth and transparent process.
The move aims to control overloading on highways and reduce damage to road infrastructure.
The new rules are expected to promote safer and more regulated transport practices across national highways.
