The First Chennai flower show 2022 was organized by the Department of Horticulture under the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers welfare in 2022 at Kalaivanar arangam, Chennai Though flower shows are being regularly conducted since decades, this is the first time in the history of the Horticulture Department to impress the citizens of Chennai, the capital city of the State. The show was Inagurated by Chepauk MLA Thiru. Udhayanithi Stalin in 2022 along with Minister for Agriculture Thiru. M.R.K. Panneerselvam and Health Minister Thiru. Ma Subramanian.
With an aim to satisfy the visitors in an unimaginable level of expectation, the first Chennai flower show was successfully conducted with the following highlights. Kadai yezhu vallalgal Generosity is said to be the act of giVing irrationaly to the monastery without requests. Such generosity adds to the significance of the generous person who is known to be philanthropist. To highlight few among the seven philanthropists, formally called kadai yezhu vallalgal in tamil tradition floral displays were kept in the fiower show that was highly welcomed by the crowd. Paari Velpaari who offered his chariot for Mullai creeper, Vazhvil ori who offered his land to people, Malaiyamaan Thirumudi Kaari who offered horses to the soldiers, Pegan who offered blanket for peacock and Adhiyamaan who offered gooseberry to Avvaiyar were those depictions. As floriculture is a demanding commercial sector and the mandate of every flower show is to shoWcase the wealth of floriculture to the visitors, Chennai flower show without missing the mandate had made arrangements to display the top 10 cut flowers viz., Cut roses, Anthuriums, Gerberas, Chrysanthemums, Gladiolus, Bird of Paradise, Orchids, Carnation, Statice and Limonium. Every such floral arrangement was given with a display stand containing information about that particular flower cultivation details and the available Schemes with the Department to assist the growers. This information had attracted the Visitors to know about these top 10 cut flowers at one place and students or botanists aiso surfed by scanning the QR enabled name boards. Tulips, a rare flower was imported & displayed to the benefit of Chennaites.
Other flowers/foliage that adorned the show Other than the top 10 cut flowers presentable in the show, flowers like Gypsophila, 1iliums, Agapanthus, Baby doll, Ivy, Calla lily, Alstromeria, CupressuS, Hydrangea, Aster, spathiphyllum, Petunia, Daisy, Begonia, Marigold, Celasia, Gomphrene, pink williams, Balsam, Ililies, Heliconia, Ginger lily, Golden rods, Asparagus, Draceana, cycads, bonsai plants, dry flowers, cacti and succulents, Pandanus etc was also kept available on the show that had attracted the visitors.
About four lakh flowers of 27 varieties and 14 types of fillers was used inside the Kalaivanar arangam that had made the first Chennai Flower Show, a grand success. Attractive structures structures of a giant peacock, a teddy bear and a giant SIMBA lion as components of the show fascinated the visitors of all age groups. These structures made of flowers like roses, chrysanthemums, carnations, gerbera etc was eye-catching to the public. Exhibits with attractive flowers and colors were also displayed among the show, A ice-cream shaped chrysanthemum flower structure topped with novelty coloured chrysanthemums brought in excitement towards the visitors. Another major attraction was the cone shaped structure fully covered with different colors of Anthuriums which brought in question among the visitors whether its real or artificial. Pyramid structure arranged with ornamental celosia, a big wall of Orchids, bouquet of Alstromeria, arrangements of Gladiolus rods and a white fluffy. Teddy bear made with carnations was truly a colorful feast to the eyes of the visitors wanting them to take snaps.
Not only the structures were the main attraction, but also various other flowers like lilliums, imported Tulips, Heliconium, Bird of paradise, Ginger ilies, Honey comb lilies and African lilies gave a splendid look to the entire hall. The department of Horticulture Plantation crops, not only made it a hall decorated with flowers but also exhibited various carved structures and arrangements from vegetables, fruits and spices, showing some important artworks depicting portraits of dravidian leaders. Valluvar statue, Butterfly structure and flower bouquet made from vegetables also lists under major selfie areas. The selfie bus, selfie frame, selfie girl and teddy bear where the much wanted spots in the entire hal. People crowded with mobile phones to click different shots from them. Special Impressive illustrations Illustrations by means of vegetable carving and fruit arrangements in the shoW employed most of the commonly grown vegetables v1Z., Carrot, Radish, Pumpkin, Yam, Watermelon, Muskmelon, Bitter Gourd etc depicting the faces of Thanthai Periyar, Arignar anna and Kalaignar Karunanidhi, structure of Thiruvalluvar etc.
A display of fruit pyramid added to the shows elegance. A model of bullock cart driven by a farmer ploughing his field was depicted fully made of spices and kept in the show. Selfie spots TO fascinate the visitors in recent trend, attractive selfie spots were kept and engaged the public interactive to the show. To celebrate the success of free ticket for ladies in Government buses andNaanum Mudhalvan" schemes of the Government, floral models were kept as a part of the show. Floral arches, Fiowering pots arrangement, flower Trophy etc added to the beauty of the show Photo exhibition Online photography contest was conducted from 23rd May to 31st May as a part of this flower show. The theme of the contest was kept as state Horticulture Farms/Parks Gardens", wherein the participants had taken photos in the State Horticulture Farms/Parks/Gardens owned by the Department and uploaded online.
All the participants was provided with e- certificate. Best photographs were displayed in the photo exhibition inside the show premises. At the exit of the exhibits, feedback boards overwhelmed with positive response from the visitors predominantiy in the way of appreciation and demanding for a show every year at Chennai. Hon'ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu had visited the show on June 5h and gave great applause to the Department. A visitors entering the show hall had obtained knowledge about the variety of flowers, its varied colours and other botanical information with a satisfaction of worth time to spend joining the celebrations with Department of Horticulture.
Many youtubers had uploaded videos, which was a first time review to a Government sector event connecting the urban population. Almost all the newspapers and journals had briefly narrated about the show on the day one itself that had increased the foot fall on consecutive days as well. With a tag line of "Chennai blooms with its first flower show", the New Indian Express had briefed the highlights that credited the achievements of the Department. Totally, 44888 visitors had visited the show.
