MSMEs Weigh Switch to PNG Amid New LPG Policy

Janani G 5 days ago National News

Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in Coimbatore are studying options to shift from LPG cylinders to Piped Natural Gas (PNG) following a new Central government directive.

The government has asked commercial LPG users to register their willingness for PNG connections to receive additional LPG cylinder allocations. This move has prompted MSMEs to evaluate whether switching to PNG is practical for their operations.

Industry representatives say the decision will depend on several key factors, especially infrastructure availability. R. Ramamurthy, former president of the Coimbatore District Small Industries Association (CODISSIA), questioned whether pipelines could be laid in all industrial areas where micro and small units operate.

He noted that if proper pipeline networks are developed and a steady supply of natural gas is ensured, many industries would be open to adopting PNG. MSMEs are also willing to invest in the required equipment if the transition proves feasible and reliable.

At present, industries are carefully assessing the costs, benefits, and feasibility of the shift.

The development highlights a gradual move toward cleaner energy solutions, with MSMEs exploring practical ways to adapt to evolving energy policies.
