The Education Ministry has officially declared the National Council of Educational Research and Training as a deemed university, allowing it to offer courses and award degrees.
According to a notification dated March 30, 2026, NCERT has been granted deemed university status following approval from the UGC. The decision was based on recommendations made by an expert committee earlier this year.
With this status, NCERT can now design academic programmes and confer degrees. However, the notification states that all courses must follow the norms and standards set by the UGC.
The ministry has also directed NCERT to expand its academic offerings, including starting new programmes and exploring off-campus and offshore campuses.
NCERT, which plays a key role in school education in India, is expected to strengthen its academic and research capabilities with this move.
The decision marks an important step in expanding higher education opportunities and enhancing the role of NCERT in the education system.
