Vinesh Phogat received major relief from the Delhi High Court after the court directed the Wrestling Federation of India to allow her participation in the qualification trials for the 2026 Asian Games.
The court issued the direction while hearing a petition filed by the Olympian wrestler regarding her opportunity to compete in the upcoming selection process. A bench comprising Justice D.K. Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia stated that maternity leave should not negatively affect the career opportunities of a woman athlete.
During the hearing, the court also criticized remarks reportedly made by the Wrestling Federation of India regarding Vinesh Phogat’s defeat at the 2024 Olympics. The judges expressed concern over the language used and stressed the importance of treating athletes with fairness and respect.
The order is expected to allow Vinesh Phogat to continue her preparations for international competition and participate in the upcoming qualification process without restrictions. Sports observers said the decision highlights the importance of equal opportunities and support for women athletes balancing professional careers and personal responsibilities.
The latest court ruling has brought clarity to the selection issue and reaffirmed the importance of fair treatment for athletes in Indian sports administration.
