The Central Government has removed the 11 percent import duty on cotton in a move aimed at supporting the textile and garment industry. The decision was taken following requests from industry representatives who had sought measures to improve cotton availability and ease production pressures.
According to the announcement, all customs duties on cotton imports will remain suspended from June 1 to October 30. The temporary relief is expected to increase the supply of cotton in the domestic market during a period when demand from textile manufacturers remains strong.
Industry stakeholders have welcomed the decision, noting that cotton is one of the most important raw materials used in textile and apparel production. Improved availability of imported cotton could help manufacturers manage supply requirements more effectively and maintain production schedules.
Officials indicated that the measure is intended to strengthen the textile sector by ensuring adequate access to raw materials. The reduction in import-related costs may also help lower overall production expenses for textile and garment companies.
The temporary duty waiver reflects the government's effort to support one of the country’s key manufacturing sectors. The move is expected to improve cotton availability, support industrial activity, and contribute to smoother operations across the textile and apparel industry in the coming months.
