Irai Anbu I.A.S., a rigorous disciplinarian and officer recognised for his integrity and multi-faceted personality, is going to retire as the state's top secretary Today. He is expected to devote most of his time after retirement to writing and motivational speaking. It is unknown whether the DMK government will keep him in an honorary role befitting of his eminence.

His life has been guided by self-assurance, willpower, and tireless effort. When he first took the civil services examination in the 1980s, he received a significantly lower rank. But he improved his performance, identified areas where he might improve, and finished 15th at the national level on his second attempt. His elder brother, V Thiruppugazh, was also an IAS officer who was well-known in Gujarat for his substantial contributions.

When the Covid epidemic was at its height, Irai Anbu was in charge. After becoming chief secretary, Irai Anbu commanded the School Education Department not to purchase his books for government libraries until he remained in the job, and he directed government employees not to display his books at government functions.

He was essential in outlawing the practise of beating Thandora and directed collectors to prosecute those who disobeyed the ban.  For a long period, social activists were opposed to the Thandora practise.  Irai Anbu also urged all district collectors to avoid any caste prejudice while members of local bodies hoisted the National Flag during the Independence Day celebrations that followed.

In 1990, Irai Anbu, an IAS officer from the 1988 batch, began his career as the deputy collector in Nagapattinam district.  Since then, he has held numerous important posts in departments ranging from economics and statistics to the pollution control board, the environment, and tourism.  In 1995, he worked as a special officer for the World Tamil Conference in Thanjavur.  During his stint as Kancheepuram district collector, he founded moonlight schools for children who worked on silk looms. He also worked hard to put a stop to child labour.

Irai Anbu hosted the Kalloori Kaalangal (College Days) programme on the Podhigai channel, which aired hundreds of episodes and drew a large number of viewers.  So date, he has written over 160 books in a variety of subjects. More than 50 students have earned doctorates after conducting study on Irai Anbu's novels.
