The Tamil Nadu Government Multi Super Speciality Hospital in Omandurar Estate has completed its 11th heart transplant procedure with success. Ma. Subramanian, Minister of Health, met with Ajith Kumar, 27, of Alangudi in Pudukottai district, who underwent successful surgery. Mr. Kumar, who was released on Monday, was working in another country when he needed a heart transplant. He was returned to India and treated to a hospital on July 3. The heart was donated by a 57-year-old brain-dead patient at Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital, and the surgery took place on August 22. Mr. Subramanian praised the hospital's efforts, saying, "There were about 500-700 outpatients to the hospital daily, and today it has increased up to 2,000 a day." Patients have increased fourfold, while in-patients have increased from 250 to 500. More than 550 people visit the cardiology department only for therapy."

Day of Organ Donation

Mr. Subramanian stated that the government will observe September 23 as Tamil Nadu Organ Donation Day, citing the thousands of people waiting for organs in both government and private institutions around the state. Tamil Nadu will invite other southern states and Puducherry to participate in the event as the head of National Organ and Tissue Transplantation Organization (NOTTO) South, he said. R. Shanthi Malar, Director of Medical Education, Vimala, a heart transplantation specialist, Manokaran, Secretary of the Tamil Nadu Organ Transplant Commission Gopalakrishnan, and the medical team were all present.
