The Narendra Modi government has made key changes in the National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS), promoting Deputy NSA Rajinder Khanna as Additional NSA and appointing Intelligence Bureau Special Director TV Ravichandran as Deputy NSA. "Now NSA Ajit Doval is completely free to assist PM Modi and other issues related to internal security will be handled by the additional NSA," a senior functionary in the government.
According to the official, Khanna's elevation is also aimed at maintaining continuity in the national security framework. The government has tried to rehabilitate TV Ravichandran as Deputy NSA after DIB Tapan Deka was given a one-year extension, the official said.
Recently, Vikram Misri, a 1989 batch Indian Foreign Service officer, was appointed as the Foreign Secretary. He will succeed Vinay Kwatra, who is likely to be appointed as India's ambassador to the US. Indian Ambassador to Paris Javed Ashraf will succeed Misri as Deputy NSA. The National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS), overseen by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with NSA Ajit Doval as its secretary, serves as the apex body for all matters related to internal and external security.
