Transgender Community Protests Against Proposed Bill Amendment in Chennai

Around 300 transgender persons staged a protest near the District Collectorate in Chennai on Monday, demanding the withdrawal of proposed amendments to the Transgender Bill.

The protesters raised concerns that the changes could affect their rights and recognition. Activists said the amendments propose removing the right to self-identify one’s gender and instead require a medical board to certify whether a person is transgender under a revised definition.

According to transgender rights groups, these provisions go against the fundamental rights guaranteed by the Constitution of India. They also pointed out that the changes contradict the landmark 2014 NALSA judgment by the Supreme Court, which recognized the right to self-perceived gender identity.

Participants in the protest called on the government to reconsider the proposed amendments and ensure that the rights of transgender persons are protected.

The demonstration highlights the need for continued dialogue between policymakers and the community to address concerns and ensure inclusive legislation.
