A rare 13th-century “Aasiriyam” inscription has been discovered at Etticheri Kanmai in Cholapuram near Sivaganga, drawing the attention of historians and researchers. The inscription was found in the middle section of the water body and is considered an important addition to the historical records of Tamil Nadu.

According to researchers, the inscription provides evidence that merchants in the region were offered protection and shelter during the medieval period. Such references are valuable because they help historians understand the social, economic, and administrative systems that existed centuries ago.

Experts noted that “Aasiriyam” inscriptions are extremely rare in Tamil Nadu. Only a limited number of such records have been identified so far, making this latest discovery particularly significant. The inscription is believed to offer fresh insights into trade activities and the measures taken to support traveling merchants during that era.

Archaeological researchers are expected to conduct further studies to document and interpret the details contained in the inscription. The findings may contribute to a better understanding of regional history and the development of trade networks in southern India.

The discovery highlights the rich historical heritage of Tamil Nadu and reinforces the importance of preserving and studying ancient records for future generations.
