Gingee K.S. Masthan, minister for minorities and non-resident Tamils welfare, said here on Thursday that the government will take the necessary steps to release the Coimbatore bomb blast convicts.

Addressing reporters after attending an event in Thanjavur to distribute welfare measures to people from minority communities, the minister stated that convicts in the 1998 case will be released based on the recommendations of the committee formed by the state government to prepare a list of those to be released.

The BJP has been vehemently opposed to the convict's release.

On the day of BJP leader L.K Advani's election meeting in Coimbatore in February 1996, 19 bombs exploded in various locations.

Following a thorough investigation, a special court sentenced 57 people to various terms of imprisonment, including life.

In response to a question about Muslims seeking 10% reservations in education and employment, the minister stated that former Chief Minister M.Karunanithi issued an ordinance granting 3.5% reservation to members of the community.

"We are still unable to fully utilise reservation." The government of Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has implemented the "Pudumai Pen" scheme to prevent child marriage and reduce the droupout rate of girl children. As a result, members of the Muslim community should come forward to take advantage of the 3.5% reservation,' he said.

The minister stated that efforts are also being made to assist minorities in utilising all of the schemes available for their development by raising awareness through the creation of such meetings.

When asked about BJP state president K.Annamalai's constant criticisms of the government's Dravidian model, the minister stated. 'We don't take it seriously because a person educated through reservation criticises this government.'

Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi, Minister for School Education, Thanjavur Collector Dinesh Ponraj Oliver, MPs, MLAs, and revenue department officials attended the event.
