According to Minister for Electricity V. Senthilbalaji, preliminary steps have been taken by Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco) to establish the State's first solar energy park at Tiruvarur.

He told reporters on Tuesday that Chief Minister M.K. Stalin had recently announced that the State government would build 4,000 MW solar power plants. All districts in the state would have a solar energy park, it had been announced. Tangedco officials had begun the process of establishing the first park in Tiruvarur.

Mr. Senthilbalaji predicted that Tamil Nadu, which has made a name for itself in harnessing natural energy sources, particularly wind, would emerge as a model state in harnessing solar energy in the country.

The state's energy demand was approximately 16,000 MW per day. Almost half of the energy was obtained at exorbitant cost from private suppliers. The State government had embarked on a plan to tap solar energy in order to bridge the gap. It would significantly reduce the cost of energy procurement.

The residents who had been relocated to a government school received welfare assistance from the Minister. He also assured them that new houses would be built for them as soon as possible.
